The Library is Not Closed!

Greetings all – So much is happening fo fast these days with COVID-19. Many libraries have closed their physical buildings but their virtual offerings remain. Library folk have stepped up to keep the human face of the library visible – online story times, video chats for reference, phone services with library phones transferred to remote staff, etc.

I love this example from Desmond Fish Public Library and all the librarians in their Zoom windows. This is the human face of the library!  Check out the link for a lot more!

Perhaps some of you are working to deliver library services online or you have seen cool examples. Please share here.

That’s so cool! My library is hosting some virtual events like Tea & Stitch, story time, and Tech Tuesdays. I think they’re also hosting a live happy hour this Friday. Also, we’ve been providing patrons with a lot of information about our databases that they can use since we’re closed. This is a trying time but it’s really nice to see how libraries can still reach and interact with the communities they serve.

Anybody watching the Library 2.0 webinars today – Libraries Stepping Up! Serving the Needs of Communities in Crisis. Copied the schedule from the email. Zoom is filled up, unsurprisingly, but the youtube link is working great. Super interesting stuff. Right now is the self care session! Recordings will probably be up on youtube after, too.

I volunteer at my library as a reading tutor. Some other volunteers are doing Zoom sessions to keep the tutoring going. I’m working with my student’s mom to try and figure out the technology on their end, but I’m hoping we’ll be up and running next week.

It’s working! I send him an invite on Google Hangouts (Zoom proved to be too complicated and he’s using Google Classroom for school so they were more familiar with that set up) and we use my Hoopla account to check out ebooks. I share my screen with the Hoopla ebook with him so we can both see the page and then he reads it. The rest of our lessons are a little more complicated since we’re not in the same room, but at least it’s something!
