Your Community Site Blog Theme – Important Update

Greetings all – We have had some issues with some blog themes not displaying comments. Our IT support folks tried looking at all the settings but saw nothing wrong. We discovered when we switched themes on the affected blogs, the commenting system worked. What has probably happened is the theme developer has not updated the theme in a long time.

We suspect that some themes do not work right with the current edition of WordPress. Unfortunately, there are a number of outdated themes on our network. We haven’t been deleting them, because we don’t want to damage existing student sites. We are stuck between a rock and a hard place. If you are having this issue, we would suggest changing your theme. To check, just take a look at one of your posts that has comments. In addition, my current INFO 298 students will be joining the “Tech Support Group” at the Community Site to help out with answering questions. INFO 200 students might also consider tagging the INFO 298 assistants directly: Michele Atwater @matwater213; Stratos Xanthus @strxan; and Melissa Kemp @melissakemp.

Here are some themes we have had excellent results with:

Sorry to hear, @lgivan… I visited your blog site and see that the comments are currently working. I also see that you have switched to the WP “Ashe” theme — so hopefully that solves the problem. Might you consider sharing what issues you previously found with the “Arcade Basic” theme?

Hi, @bellacose… I see that you have switched to the WP “Matala” theme and all of the comments are currently showing up. According to WP: “This theme hasn’t been updated in in over 2 years. It may no longer be maintained or supported and may have compatibility issues when used with more recent versions of WordPress.” (See: As in other similar cases with themes discussed on the Community Site, it’s probably alright to continue using the “Matala” theme if you wish… Just realize that it may potentially cause some issues in the future.

Might you also consider sharing with us the problems that you encountered with the “Celine” and “Veritgo” themes?

The comments weren’t showing up with either of those themes. The number of comments was visible but if you clicked on it to view comments they remained invisible.
Thank you for the heads up about the Matala theme, I’ll make note that I may have to change it down the road.

I have updated my theme and so far it looks like everything is working as it should. My original theme was Arcade Basic, which I really liked and was bummed to find out was having the issues of comments not showing up. Luckily I was able to set up the new theme pretty easily and it’s growing on me!

Hi @fernecreates… I’m very happy to see that updating to the “Ashe” theme seems to have solved the comments problem on your blog site. Unfortunately, we have recently noticed a few unexpected difficulties with the RSS feeds when researching this theme. Please let us know if you experience any unforeseen issues with Feedly. Thanks so much!
