Thank you Professor! I will do that. Incidentally, there are actually a lot of crossword puzzles in peer reviewed journals (ask me how I know). Seeing as everyone likes doing crosswords, someone should really study that…

I’m actually having a lot of trouble finding a peer-reviewed article about information behavior and crosswords. For assignments so far, I’ve taken a wide-angle view with serious leisure and then drawn comparisons […]

This isn’t related to any particular assignment, but I was idly wondering if Bates chose “berrypicking” as a name in contrast to “cherry-picking,” which is selectively using data to bolster a bad argument. It looks like cherry-picking as a term was around by the time Bates introduced hers. Coincidence? Easter egg?

Hello Professor @michael Stephens, I was just wondering if the word count requirements include the title page and references list, or just the body of the paper. Thanks!

Just FYI: I’m doing Serious Leisure and was having trouble finding a digital copy of Hartel’s 2003 paper (the starred one!) through Ebscohost. I did find a direct link to a pdf at this URL in case anyone else […]

I’ve been brainstorming ideas for a community and I’m really interested in people who make and solve crosswords. I haven’t been able to find academic articles about crosswords yet, though. Widening the search to puzzles also hasn’t turned up anything. Is that a red flag? I could certainly find something else to focus on but was curious if anyone…[Read more]

@jrogoff This group sounds like they would fit well under the banner of Serious Leisure Perspective (SLP) and Enthusiasts. There may not be specific LIS research on the information behaviors and needs of folks who make and solve crosswords or puzzles, but there is a lot of literature regarding how folks spin leisure time and what their information…[Read more]

I listen to lots of podcasts, but right now one of my favorites is Vibe Check. Three queer Black men–Sam Sanders, Saeed Jones, and Zach Stafford–talk about the week’s news, pop culture, literature, and whatever else they’re thinking about. It feels like listening in on a group chat between three friends, which is what inspired them to start it…[Read more]

I also love that podcast! Their comments are so funny. I’ve read a lot of the non-fiction bestsellers and also been part of a non-fiction book club for years, and it’s always a trip when they dive into something I already read–Atomic Habits, Freakonomics, Nudge, Lean In. In fact, it’s often cathartic!
