Update! After much searching and many failed attempts to find anything on the information-seeking behaviors of cult members, I have FINALLY found a truly promising source!
Hoping everyone here has some of this success soon, too. Now to actually dive into the literature and read it all…

@michael – Okay, here’s what I’m thinking (and yes, regarding your quote, I was thinking about selecting Flat Earthers under the larger banner of TSes–that was what I was referring to): as Homeyra asked below, guiding patrons to authoritative information is optimal for research. So–getting away from psychological things and getting more toward…[Read more]

@reallyrielee Choosing is part of the assignment! I will say take a look at this from the Nautilus example on the course blog:
A Research-based information source is:
• Published by experts or academics
• Intended for use by many different people (community members, academics, etc.)
• One-way communication (from expert to reader)
• Provide…[Read more]

@homeyra Thanks for this question! I think this is what I was trying to ask above, and I think you framed it better.

@melissasnowprince @thegab2022 I feel this SO HARD! FT work, two kids under 5, home life, school…I feel like there’s no time for me to even clear a table so I can put my computer on it (as I type this, my 8-month-old is banging on the table and my laptop is hanging off said table). I’m watching videos as I feed kids, reading and drafting as I…[Read more]

@michael – I was actually thinking about using the Flat Earth Society website as my community-based information source, since there’s a message-board component to that website, as well.
I did find a few encyclopedias on conspiracy theories, but I also want to be careful to not alienate my clientele. I saw this book but couldn’t really find a…[Read more]

@reallyrielee You may want to meander elsewhere. As I said above: “For this assignment, you may want to choose a certain group under the larger banner of TSs and choose resources for them” — so if you are thinking Flat Earth Society, both resources should be meant to meet their needs. Does that make sense?

INFO 200 Assignment Q & A 3 days, 12 hours ago
#sourcessurvey
Even after having a look at the assignment synthesis examples, I’m feeling a bit unsure about my approach to the research-based source for my information community of truth-seekers. I’m struggling because I’ve identified that truth-seekers are looking for information on how to relieve psychological distress, but that they will…[Read more]

@reallyrielee Hmmm… this is a difficult one. If the patron wanted info on the Flat Earth Society, al librarian would probably;ly give them this https://theflatearthsociety.org/home/ as well as other resources related to the group (and books/articles etc that might offer a more balanced view). For this assignment, you may want to choose a…[Read more]

Is Paperfile different from Paperpile or is that just a typo? In case it’s a typo–seconded! I’ve been very much appreciating Paperpile.

@dianaumana – I’m actually REALLY interested in the information needs and behaviors of people experiencing homelessness. There’s always this mismatch I notice between people experiencing homelessness and available resources, and I even had a concept for a project, the notes for which I’ll share here in case they’re of use to you!

Thinking out loud a little more, here:
If I were to select cults in general, I’d try this research statement:
To understand the information needs + behaviors of cults, and how information sources are meeting those needs.
To understand the information needs + behaviors of cult members. Hypothesis of information needs (or is it too early to…[Read more]

Choosing Your Community Discussion 1 month, 2 weeks ago
What I’m really interested in, in general, are cults and how to infiltrate such information communities. Before this course began, I was intent on studying the information community of the evangelical Baptist-Protestant community in Fresno: not what most folks would think of as a cult in the traditional sense, but certainly a cult depending on the…[Read more]

@reallyrielee I would think the broader the better for cults as an information community. I honestly have not seen much research on this but it could be out there. I have had a few students look at religious groups but again there may not be much LIS research out there related specifically to info behaviors and needs. The most successful one I…[Read more]
