A space to “think out loud” about your community of choice. From the research paper assignment: You will be required to identify an information community to examine, locate and critically evaluate the scholarly and professional literature relating to that community’s information-seeking behavior and needs, gather additional data about your users’ information practices and preferences, and report on the results.
NOTE: One thing to think about as you decide on your community choice: perhaps consider a community that you could one day serve in an information environment that could be any type of library setting, etc.

Hi everyone – I am interested in looking into how deaf or hard-of-hearing folks share and seek information – a preliminary search into this on our Library and Information Source Database showed few peer-reviewed results, which surprises me since I feel like libraries often discuss accessibility in resources and programming for deaf patrons. I may…[Read more]

@doremimimimi I have had successful papers on the Deaf Information Community. I recall there are some LIS articles looking at the Deaf as well the broader category of disabled individuals.

Hi all, I am interested in looking at how people learn indigenous languages, and specifically wanted to research those who are learning Quechua. I’m still wondering if I should focus specifically on Quechua learning in the States, or if I should broaden the scope and look at both Quechua learning in North and South America. In a similar vein, I…[Read more]
-
@ectaina I would suggest focusing on the Quechua learning community broadly. My thought is you will have to pull in LIS studies of language learners, learners in general, etc. It might be good to do some preliminary searches in the databases. See this for links to search…[Read more]

Thank you for the response, and for the tip about looking into language learners.

Hello:) I am thinking about Children’s Book Publishers as an Info Community. I am curious about how books are selected, trends started and then the power that publishers have over the types of info and availability of info distributed. I am wondering though if this is too broad of a topic?
-
@bookflyer This is interesting. I am not aware of how much published LIS literature there would be on the information behaviors and needs of Children’s Book Publishers. It may be more focused on publishers in general or authors… I have had papers on the info behaviors and needs of authors and artists before. You may want to do some trial s…[Read more]

Thanks for the feedback. I may need to switch gears entirely.

Hello! I’m thinking of researching teenagers seeking out sex education. I was a bit concerned about finding academic articles on the subject since its a community with concerns over privacy and discretion (and safety, in many cases), but I’m actually finding quite a few. I think libraries have the potential to be an instrumental sex ed resource,…[Read more]

@cmisola This is an important area. There is robust research on info behaviors and seeking of Yes and that includes sex education. LGBTQ+ YAs are also an important subgroup…and somewhat vulnerable these days. Agree with you about libraries serving them.

Hi Ya’ll,
I am still uncertain about the community I wish to research. A few ideas that I have in mind are prison inmates and their accessibility to information. Or Chicano mural artists and how they use information to organize resistance through art.
-
@priscilla023 Both of these would work. One unique thing about the incarcerated community is the fact that most of the literature is focused on offering services to those in prison more than the usual focus of research. It is all viewed through the lens of prison libraries. For the other, you might find useful studies related to info behaviors of…[Read more]

I am strongly considering focusing on addiction recovery communities, but I am concerned as it is recommended to choose a community you are not directly involved with. I could choose an addiction that I am not in recovery for, but I am worried that in doing so, it may limit the research and literature available to me? I know that the recovery…[Read more]

@alannahford I have had successful papers on information communities made up of folks in recovery. You could go broad and focus on various addiction recovery communities.

Hello. Would writing about manga translations and scanlations be all right?

@christinew12 We discussed this in the chat. I think it would work to highlight those things as part of your explorations of the information behaviors and needs of the manga community.

Sorry. I wrote this before I asked the question in the chat. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

Hi everyone!
I would love to write about Taylor Swift and Swifties for my information community. I know it was said that it is hard to write about your own fandom…[Read more]-
@laurenhayes66 The TS info community would be perfect and you would have the LIS research related to fandom info behaviors as well as all the studies of how folks use social media etc. to further causes, share etc.

Hi again, everyone! After looking into all of the different “fandoms” out there, it is hard to narrow it down to one because they are all interesting. Would exploring the intersection between fandom/fan culture and libraries/information science be too broad of a topic? Any advice would be appreciated!
-
@awilliams1998 One thing you could do is focus very broadly on fan communities as information communities. In the discussion section of your paper you could explore the library response to fan groups such as libraries that host “cons” and cosplay programs, or other service focused on fans. On the other side of that work, you would have a really…[Read more]

I’ve been having a hard time narrowing in on the information community I want to work with. @elenaporton Take a look at the artists example on the synthesis page. You will see how the student used broader studies on the info behavior and needs of artists to craft a view of her community. It is also just fine to use an article that focuses on the information behaviors and needs of creatives in general.

I would like to research comic books for my information community. Would like to try to write about how comics and their place in popular culture have changed over the years.

@christinew12 If you are thinking about comic book fans, I have had successful papers on the community. You can pull from the literature related to the Serious Leisure Perspective (SLP) and Enthusiasts.

I’m leaning toward National Parks visitors for my information community. Still not sure if and how I should narrow the scope. I’m thinking of focusing on first time visitors, amateur hikers, or those looking to visit all the national parks.
-
@laurafong This sounds good. You may not need to narrow specifically but you could address first time visitors etc in your explorations.
-
Also, this group (or broader travelers) would fall into the Serious Leisure Perspective (SLP) and Enthusiasts area of the literature as well.
-
@michael I couldn’t figure out how to respond to your feedback for Blog Post #2 on Canvas, but thank you for pointing me in the direction of the serious leisure perspective and enthusiasts for tourism. I’ll be sure to check out the King Library resources to hone in on some search strategies.

@laurafong You should be able to use the comment box in the grade book. Take a look. We can investigate if it does not show up.
