#sourcessurvey
Even after having a look at the assignment synthesis examples, I’m feeling a bit unsure about my approach to the research-based source for my information community of truth-seekers. I’m struggling because I’ve identified that truth-seekers are looking for information on how to relieve psychological distress, but that they will…[Read more]

I have a question about the Research based source for the #sourcessurvey. My community is birdwatchers, would a birding guide book be part of this category? It seems to me that it is research based and guide books are a sort of encyclopedia for this group, but I just want to be sure before I go ahead and pick one!

@rubyhuber Choosing is part of the assignment! I will say take a look at this from the Nautilus example on the course blog:
A Research-based information source is:
• Published by experts or academics
• Intended for use by many different people (community members, academics, etc.)
• One-way communication (from expert to reader)
• Provides fact-ba…[Read more]-

Hi @michael, I have a question regarding the Info Resources Survey assignment. I am working on anti-vax communities that are usually looking for misinformation. For a research-based information source, I cannot (and it’s impossible to ) find any scientific journal or authoritative website that publishes misinformation. So, is it okay to choose a…[Read more]

Hey, everyone! So I’m hoping to get some clarification on the #sourcessurvey assignment. Do the sources we choose need to be something the community at large would consider valuable? Or do they just need to be conceivably valuable to at least some members of the community? I’m researching video gamers, and even with all the similarities between…[Read more]

@staceynerdin That sounds good. You just need to make the case for the resource being useful to the community (or segment of the community).

@reallyrielee Hmmm… this is a difficult one. If the patron wanted info on the Flat Earth Society, al librarian would probably;ly give them this https://theflatearthsociety.org/home/ as well as other resources related to the group (and books/articles etc that might offer a more balanced view). For this assignment, you may want to choose a…[Read more]
@michael – I was actually thinking about using the Flat Earth Society website as my community-based information source, since there’s a message-board component to that website, as well.
I did find a few encyclopedias on conspiracy theories, but I also want to be careful to not alienate my clientele. I saw this book but couldn’t really find a…[Read more]
@reallyrielee You may want to meander elsewhere. As I said above: “For this assignment, you may want to choose a certain group under the larger banner of TSs and choose resources for them” — so if you are thinking Flat Earth Society, both resources should be meant to meet their needs. Does that make sense?
@michael – Okay, here’s what I’m thinking (and yes, regarding your quote, I was thinking about selecting Flat Earthers under the larger banner of TSes–that was what I was referring to): as Homeyra asked below, guiding patrons to authoritative information is optimal for research. So–getting away from psychological things and getting more toward…[Read more]
