Hi, @michael! I have a quick question about #blogreport5 and the sources we should use. The prompt says to explore the professional literature and resources included in the Teaching and Learning module, but does that mean that we are required to use these sources to write our post? Also, does this mean we cannot use outside sources that we have…[Read more]

@awilliams1998 No worries. Next week’s module will help too. 😀

Hi, @michael! Would an encyclopedia created for leisure purposes like the Marvel Encylopedia be an acceptable “research-based” source for the #informationsourcessurvey? I don’t think it could be considered an academic or peer-reviewed source, but its information comes straight from the comics’ creators themselves. Here is a link to what I’m…[Read more]

Hello @awilliams1998 As I said in the assignment chat I do I not weigh on specific choices because that is part of the assignment. I just published this post that may help you decide:

Hi, @michael, I just have a quick question about the #LISmodelresearchsummary. Is there a wrong theory or model to choose for our particular group? I know that some may be better choices for particular communities, especially as you noted in the lecture this week, but does that mean that we can’t choose a different one if we feel like we find a…[Read more]

@awilliams1998 Great question. I would say choose the one that you feel best suits your community. This part of the assignment — Describe how the model or theory provides a lens for understanding the information behaviors of your chosen community — allows you to share why you think it fits. If you see a connection – go for it!

Okay, thank you so much!

Hi again, everyone! After looking into all of the different “fandoms” out there, it is hard to narrow it down to one because they are all interesting. Would exploring the intersection between fandom/fan culture and libraries/information science be too broad of a topic? Any advice would be appreciated!
-
@awilliams1998 One thing you could do is focus very broadly on fan communities as information communities. In the discussion section of your paper you could explore the library response to fan groups such as libraries that host “cons” and cosplay programs, or other service focused on fans. On the other side of that work, you would have a really…[Read more]

Hi, everyone! After reviewing the list of past information communities that have been researched for this class, I feel most drawn to the more “fan-based” communities. As of now, I’m trying to decide between Harry Potter Fans/Potterheads, Cosplayers, and a few more ideas that I came up with on my own, such as Star Trek Fans, Twilight Fans, or The…[Read more]

@awilliams1998 Oh yes! Any of your choices of fan communities would be good. There is some super interesting research happening in this space. This would also fall into the broader category of Serious Leisure / Enthusiasts as I mentioned below.

Hi, everyone! I was wondering if I could get some help with some tips on citing a picture in #blogreport1. How do we go about citing/captioning a meme or screenshot? Would we follow the rules for a stock image? Also, I know it was mentioned in the assignment description that it is hard to create a hanging indent in WordPress, so will we be…[Read more]

@awilliams1998 No penalties for that… you may choose whatever image citation you would like for blogging. This might be useful:

Hi, there! I don’t listen to podcasts much, but I have found that I enjoy “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend.” It’s good for a laugh, but they get into some pretty interesting stories.
