Hi all, I’ve tried to embed an infographic for Blog #7 and ended up having to convert it to PNG for upload. I used Canva and the embed code keeps getting deleted whenever I save or preview the post. Does anyone have experience embedding from Canva into WordPress? The online guides I searched show menus that I don’t see on the site.

Hi @michael, regarding the participation assignment, how do I find the community blogging site activity feed URL for my blog? I’ve forgotten how many comments I’ve left and I’d like to see. Thanks!

Hi, @michael! I have a quick question about #blogreport5 and the sources we should use. The prompt says to explore the professional literature and resources included in the Teaching and Learning module, but does that mean that we are required to use these sources to write our post? Also, does this mean we cannot use outside sources that we have…[Read more]

@awilliams1998 You can use what you find in your own research and/or the module resources.

Thank you!

@michael is it okay to change the margins of the LRM template to 0.5? I noticed in the assignment synthesis examples the margins were smaller. Or does it have to be the 1in margin? Asking because I am having a hard time reading what I type with the 1in margins. XD

Hello @Michael! I was curious if a website like AA nor NA would fall under a community based resource or a research based resource? I’m leaning toward it being a community source, but would love additional input!
-
@alannahford as I have said, I do not comment on specific choices for this assignment because it’s actually a big part of the assignment. Take a look at the post I did on our course blog about the Nautilus and see where your resource falls in the list of character characteristics shared in that post.

Hi @michael,
For the Information Source Survey, the instructions say “Review examples of Information Sources Survey. Maybe I just missed something, but I only found the template. Are we required to use the template or are there examples of other surveys? The instructions only say we have the use the headers, but without other examples, I’m…[Read more]-
@librarygryphon it really would be best to use the template because this assignment does not require a lot of prose. The rotation section of the template can be filled in rather easily, and then you can focus on the last sections for critical thinking, synthesis, etc.

@librarygryphon there are examples are here:

In Blog Report #4, the assignment asks for a brief summary of the author’s credentials, but if our reference article is has multiple author’s should there be brief summaries of each of the author’s credentials?
-
@alannahford A sentence or two about each is just fine.

@michael The research-based source that I am using for my Information Sources Survey has a super long name/title, can I shorten the title when referring to it in my paper or do I have to say the whole name?
-
Hello @pythao Yes …shorten it if you would like. Maybe an acronym? The Big Encyclopedia of Twin peaks = BETP
-
okay! Thank you! Just wanted to make sure that it was okay to do that! 🙂

This isn’t related to any particular assignment, but I was idly wondering if Bates chose “berrypicking” as a name in contrast to “cherry-picking,” which is selectively using data to bolster a bad argument. It looks like cherry-picking as a term was around by the time Bates introduced hers. Coincidence? Easter egg?
-
@jrogoff Great question! I like the idea of it being an Easter Egg!

@michael question: In my blog post#3, in one of the articles I used, the author quoted from another source and I used that same quote in my post. I wasn’t sure how to quote it, so I wrote so and so quoted from Author last name (year) and then “quote.” But I did not include that source in my references. Is that okay to do?
-
@pythao That is fine. That works well for me. 😀

okay! 🙂

@Michael I hope you are enjoying your trip. I found an amazing peer reviewed article about my information community but it was only available in Chinese. I used google translate to translate it and I like what I found. Is it okay to use a machine translated document of an article? Are there special rules around that?
-
Hello @sweetmj Got back at 1am this morning after delays and I am walking around in a brain fog! But I love this idea. Yes – use the machine translation. APA may have some rules but let’s roll with it for now however you would like to cite.

Hi, @michael! Would an encyclopedia created for leisure purposes like the Marvel Encylopedia be an acceptable “research-based” source for the #informationsourcessurvey? I don’t think it could be considered an academic or peer-reviewed source, but its information comes straight from the comics’ creators themselves. Here is a link to what I’m…[Read more]

I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed with keeping track of all my used and potential citations. I recall in some tutorial or training that there were two suggested citation trackers. Does anyone remember what those were?
-
Hi Laura! I had Paperfile and Zotero written down from INFO 203 — are these what you were looking for?
-
@aroset Yes, thank you! I couldn’t remember if that info was from 203 or 200. Have you used either of them?
-
Jumping in here! I’ve been using Zotero since my undergrad and I LOVE it. The browser extension means you can save sources with one click and sort them into whatever nested folders you like, and the latest update acts as a PDF reader so you can read and annotate your sources within the app. 10/10
-
@tlueders That’s very helpful. Thanks for the recommendation, Taylor. I’ll try out Zotero.

Happy Saturday, @Michael! Quick question about the LIS Model Research Summary:
For the summary of other scholars who have used the chosen model/theory in their research, should I be focused more on applications of the model to various subjects? or developments/contributions to the model in the literature?
Hope that question makes sense!
-
@tlueders It does make sense and I would say you can do both or one or the other. One of the interesting things about models and studies that utilize the model, as you will see changes or suggested changes from scholars.
-
Excellent 🙂 thank you!

Hi, @michael, I just have a quick question about the #LISmodelresearchsummary. Is there a wrong theory or model to choose for our particular group? I know that some may be better choices for particular communities, especially as you noted in the lecture this week, but does that mean that we can’t choose a different one if we feel like we find a…[Read more]
-
@awilliams1998 Great question. I would say choose the one that you feel best suits your community. This part of the assignment — Describe how the model or theory provides a lens for understanding the information behaviors of your chosen community — allows you to share why you think it fits. If you see a connection – go for it!

Okay, thank you so much!

Hello. I have a question about Blog #2. Do we just turn in what we wrote in to Canvas, or are we also suppose to post it on our WordPress blog?

@christinew12 Under the Assignments menu option there is a page devoted to Submissions and grading rubrics:
Submit each Blog Report URL to Canvas by the due date for grading.
