I hope you are doing okay after what has been a stressful and disruptive stretch. The Provost has emailed that Canvas has been restored, which is good news, but we will all need to be especially diligent and mindful over the next few days as systems stabilize and everyone regains access to course materials, submission tools, and university communication channels.
Because of this disruption, I have decided to extend the INFO 200 research paper due date to Wednesday, May 13, at 11:59 PM Pacific Time. This is a two-day extension for everyone, intended to give you some breathing room and time to complete and submit your work carefully.
Please note that this is the final deadline.* I will not accept research papers after Wednesday, May 13, at 11:59 PM Pacific Time. Since I am granting this extension to the entire section, no additional individual extensions will be granted except in the most serious and documented emergency circumstances. Please do not wait until the final minutes to submit your paper, as files can take time to upload and process in Canvas.
A reminder about submissions: there are two submission attempts available for the research paper. These are there in case you notice something right after submitting and need to upload a corrected version. They are not intended for me to review a draft or advise you on revisions before grading. If the version you submit is your final version, please leave me a submission comment letting me know that I can go ahead and grade it. I would like to begin grading as soon as I can so I can return your work and you can see how you are doing in the class. There are no resubmissions for additional points, make-up points, or extra credit for this assignment.
This situation is also a useful reminder of how much our work in higher education depends on technology, and how important access, communication, backup plans, and patience become when systems do not work as expected. In INFO 200, you are studying many of the issues this moment brings into focus: how people access information, what happens when access is interrupted, and how communities support each other through disruption.
Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and care during a difficult time. Please use the additional time wisely, check that your paper and files are ready, and submit well before the final deadline if at all possible.
* If canvas goes down again, we will adjust accordingly. They have told us to be prepared for that to happen just in case, but if things stay stable, the due date is fixed.
