Hey all – I just want to do a general check in with everyone and see how you are doing. I want make sure everybody’s doing as best they can. It feels like there is a lot of churn in the world right now, so please take good care of yourselves.

Thanks for checking in. It feels like whiplash with everything going on. I am doing the best that I can which doesn’t feel like enough sometimes.
I hope you (and everyone here) are also taking care.
@nhkatie I feel the same, thank you commenting. Hope you are taking care, too.

@nhkatie @cecinsd thanks for sharing. I think one of the most important things we can do right now is put as much positive energy as we can out into the world. I’m trying.
Appreciate the check- in. Feel like I am barely keeping it together. My dog helps a lot—he has very, very soft ears and he does a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to staving off “Menty Bs.” I imagine your dogs are a great source of comfort, too @Michael. My hope for everyone else is that they can also find comfort with a sweet dog or cat.
@julienoted my dogs, help a lot too. And my podcasts in my ears when we go walking. I understand about keeping it together. Please take good care.
I love this! My favorite part of every day is going out to my backyard and feeding my cats. They live such a chill and simple life. They have a wonderful way of grounding me and bringing me back to earth. It’s so difficult to process everything, sometimes but it’s nice to have the comfort of your pet and knowing you’re doing the best you can for them.
Thank you so much for this, Dr. Stephens. I’m thinking of everyone at SJSU and students/staff/faculty at MLIS.
The ALA has shared this on their website for Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) advocacy.

Take care, everyone

I feel so grateful to be in this program and have access to resources and this degree- but most importantly have access to people doing amazing work!
@elenaloper thank you for these kind thoughts. There is something very good about working for the state of California in this situation. I am worried about universities in other states.
I hope ALA continues to push and to push back as hard as they possibly can.

whoopsie double post!
@lolorena No worries! And I’ll respond again because it’s such a cool comment. It’s so nice to feel grounded in something so simple. I would say I feel grounded when I am doing all the routine that the dogs have here throughout the day like first walk in the morning, breakfast, walk after breakfast. All the little routines can be very helpful
Thanks for checking in. It’s taken me a while to gather my thoughts, as someone who works at an academic library at a major research institution. Our budget will be directly affected by the federal changes in research funding. We’ve been assured that maintaining existing personnel is a top priority, so vacant positions will probably go unfilled and our library’s collection will be heavily impacted. There’s so much that’s still unknown and up-in-the-air right now, including a large re-organization and changes to our position descriptions as we cut back on certain services. It’s my first time experiencing something like this.
I really have appreciated the deadline extensions on assignments and all of the great feedback. It’s been so helpful to take a breather and have extra time to refine my work. I hope everyone has a relaxing spring break.
@mheryford these are uncharted waters for so many of us right now. Personally, one of the hardest things I have to deal with is when stuff is up in the air as you say. Please do your best. I still have strong hope that things will turn around sooner than later.
I’m so happy to be able to give extensions throughout the flow of the semester.
